Map client tool - call for volunteers

Postby bob » Fri Jan 11, 2008 6:50 pm

I've been chatting with Al Pivonka about ways to make it easy for people to update and use the worldmap data, the goals are to improve the map data and make that data available for people to make their own things.

Whats needed is an online map editing tool.

Al has kindly offered to start building a tool that integrates the map data with satellite images, it'll be Java based and will run in a web browser allowing users to add detail to maps and correct whats already there.

We'll need help to make this a reality so if you know that Java is'nt a hot beverage and would like to get involved please get in touch, either post to this thread or PM 'alpivonka' if you can help out.

Welcome all.
Bob and myself where talking today about what the Manderlust WorldMap Editor (for lack of a better name) would provide the end user.

Would provide:
---- Security to login -- Must be a registered user.
1) drawing/tracing
2) able to handle points, lines & polygons
3) trace satellite photos from google
4) Provide download and upload of map segments for registered users.
5) work with map data as vector (polish format).

Sounds simple right (LOL).
Bob will be helping with teaching about the file formats and integration with the map files.

I've been working with Java (J2EE) architecture for going on 10 years for a consulting company in Indianapolis, IN and I'm still learning new things every day.

My suggestion to Bob is to create a client application not a web enable application due to so many different browser constraints (for the time being).
I'm thinking of going down the direction of using either Eclipse or Netbeans as the Rich Client Program for a stable basis.
We will be developing the framework and then creating plugins into the decided upon platform (Eclipse/Netbeans).

To understand more about what I'm talking about here is some reading for you.
http://platform.netbeans.org/
http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/Rich_Client_Platform

Netbeans seems to be the easiest to get started with.
Yet I have use eclipse for years, I'll have to learn Netbeans.

Either one will give the project a leg up.

Feel free to message me with any question you may have.

I'll volunteer to be a tester. Although I now work as a manager I do have programming experience. I can read Java but am not a Java programmer. C++, PHP, C, Cobal, Pascal but am seriously rusty!

Sounds like a brilliant idea.
I'd really like to help, but I was always rubbish at anything "code" related, if there was some
kind of GUI I'd be ok, if I can help in any way, let me know.

Hi there,

I might be able to help you out.

I have an application that shows satellite data (wrapped around a globe) as PNG-images in web pages.
It has the option to plot GPX-files on the world map (no other formats at the moment).

It is however written as an apache2 module (in C), not in Java.

you can take a look at them demo at: http://www.webtravellog.com/globeDemo/browse.php

Happy travels
